Male Pattern Baldness
To assist in describing the degree and type of hair loss, the Hamilton-Norwood Scale has been the standard for male pattern baldness since it was introduced in 1941. The Hamilton-Norwood scale is a guide to determine how mild or advanced a man’s hair loss/level of baldness is, and if a hair transplant is considered, how many follicular unit extractions (FUEs) a patient will need. The higher the number of FUEs, the more advanced the hair loss.

Female Pattern Baldness
Baldness in women takes a different pattern, and is measured on the Ludwig Scale, which ranges from stages I to III. Again, we use this classification to determine how many follicular unit extractions (FUEs), a patient may need.
